Hallstatt: Austria’s Timeless Gem

Hallstatt is a small town located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, near the eastern shore of the Hallstätter See. It is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and its picturesque setting in the mountains.

The town has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age, and it was an important center for salt production during the Iron Age and Roman times. The salt mines in the area were in operation for over 7,000 years and provided a valuable source of income for the town. In fact, the name “Hallstatt” comes from the Old High German word for salt, “hall,” and “statt,” meaning place or settlement.

This small chapel, located just outside of the town center, contains the remains of over 1,200 individuals who were buried in the town’s cemetery between the 16th and 18th centuries. The bones were exhumed in order to make room for new burials, and they were then arranged in an ornate display inside the chapel.
