Johnny Depp is set to grace the silver screen once again in the upcoming historical drama “Jeanne du Barry”. This marks one of his first major film roles since his highly publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp portrays King Louis XV in the film, while Maiwenn takes on the titular role of Jeanne du Barry, the king’s mistress. Maiwenn also directs the movie, which is coming to select theaters in the United States through a partnership between Fathom Events and distributor Vertical Entertainment.
“Jeanne du Barry” premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, generating significant buzz. Peter Jarowey, partner at Vertical Entertainment, expressed his excitement about the film’s release, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with Fathom Events to showcase Johnny Depp’s return to the big screen in Maiwenn’s stunning cinematic masterpiece.”
The film’s theatrical run will be limited to 500 theaters initially, with the potential for expansion based on its performance. This release strategy serves as a test of public interest in Johnny Depp following his legal controversies. While some studios distanced themselves from the actor during his legal battles, public perception shifted following the trial’s conclusion.
“Jeanne du Barry” opens in theaters on May 2nd, 2024.
