With the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, we also experienced the death of several of our favorite superheroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow. But it was Iron Man’s demise that really sting us, and ever since, we’ve been hoping to see the superhero again in any of the Marvel productions. After years of waiting, it appears like the day has finally come as Robert Downey Jr. may have hinted at his probable return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a recent media engagement. Yes, you did read that correctly. Scroll down to continue reading.
Robert has not only dominated our hearts as Iron Man, but also occasionally as Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Dolittle, or Chaplin. But his Marvel superhero persona will be ingrained in our memories for a very long time.
Robert Downey Jr clearly misses being Iron Man. In an interview with Deadline, while promoting Netflix‘s documentary about his father Robert Downey Sr., he said, “What I miss most? Being in the trenches with Kevin Feige throughout; the beginning with Jon Favreau, it’s like a beautiful dream now; the middle, with Shane Black on Iron Man 3, we’d just had Exton and shot it mostly in Wilmington, NC. It was idyllic and subversive. And The End, when I realized I’d made so many close friends in the MCU cast, and the Russo Brothers helping me embrace Tony’s arc.”
You might have been shocked by Dominique Thorne’s reaction earlier when she was asked if Tony Stark’s fans will ever see him reappear as Iron Man in the next MCU films. Dominique plays Riri Williams in Black Panther 2. Regarding the parallels between Riri and Stark, the actor said in a Comicbook interview, “They are undoubtedly comparable, but they are clearly two different expressions of this great intellect. You’ll have to wait till the series starts up again the following year to get the real answer to that question, in my opinion.
Don Cheadle hinted in a media interview from last year that Tony Stark’s passing would be significant to the future series. They will also display Rhodey’s gradual improvement, including his subsequent getting back up and walking. He continued by saying that as technology advanced, they would continue to make improvements to the suit. Even more, Cheadle hinted that they would explore Rhodey’s role more in a future episode. Cheadle stated in his closing remarks that they are attempting to close the gap between what is happening on screen in the MCU and what is seen in comic books.
All we can hope for is to witness Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in the Iron Heart series.
