On this day, 32 years ago (March 21, 1989), Madonna released her fourth solo studio album “Like A Prayer,” under Sire Records. According to Madonna, the album is dedicated to the memory of her mother: “The album is a collection of the song about my mother, my father, and bonds with my family.” she said in one of her interviews.
“Like a Prayer” received universal acclaim from music critics. The album saw huge international commercial success too. It reached No. 1 spot in 20 different countries, including Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom and United States. As of 2021, the album has sold more than 15 million units worldwide and is certified 4x platinum in the United States. “Like a Prayer” is also 5x platinum in Canada.
In the United States, the album debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 albums chart but it quickly rose to the No. 1 where it stayed there for 6 consecutive weeks, making it Madonna’s longest-running No. 1 album in her career.
“Like a Prayer” spawned the classic hits like “Like A Prayer” (reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 and went platinum) and “Express Yourself” (reached No. 2 on Billboard Hot 100 and when gold). Third single “Cherish” also reached No. 2 on the charts, while “Oh Father” and “Keep It Together” making it into the Top 20.
